Are you planning a trip in the next few weeks? Owners of certain Jeep, Chrysler or Ram vehicles might want to first check for new safety concerns on some 2022 models.
Stellantis, the maker of these and other vehicle brands, faces investigations after complaints of engines stalling and batteries catching on fire.
Engine stall in Jeep Wagoneers and Ram pickups
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on July 19 that it’s investigating 2022 Ram 1500 pickup trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUVs. This follows an April recall of 131,000 Ram pickups and Wagoneers.
The investigation covers about 150,000 vehicles with 5.7L eTorque engines, which convert energy from the braking system into electricity for the battery pack. The NHTSA received 80 complaints. Customers reported engine stalls and loss of power from electrical issues.
Many consumers said their vehicle’s engine would shut off while driving at a slow speed. The car would then shift into park and apply the emergency brake. Sometimes, it couldn’t be restarted. Depending on the cause of the stall, the NHTSA could order a recall.
Battery fire risk in Chrysler hybrid minivans
Stellantis is also conducting its own investigation into battery abnormalities in certain hybrid minivans. The company already ordered a recall for several 2017 to 2021 Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrids on July 18.
Stellantis has told 24,000 owners to stop charging and start parking their vehicles outside to avoid battery fire risk. Customers have reported seven battery fires affecting parked vehicles without the engines running.
How the lemon law protects you from defective vehicles
Auto safety regulators look out for drivers by investigating defective cars. You can take steps to ensure that your consumer rights are protected.
The California Lemon Law, also known as the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, requires makers and sellers to replace or provide consumers with refunds for cars with substantial defects. If you see signs of a defect, ask the dealership where you bought the vehicle for a full refund or a new car. Getting assistance from an experienced lemon law attorney is also advisable.
Stellantis encourages affected customers to contact their dealership. You can protect yourself by staying up to date on recall announcements and investigation results. Keeping you and your loved ones safe is essential, as is protecting your financial health through state lemon laws.
